Abstract

The purposes of this study are to evaluate the applicability of pressure ulcer risk assessment tool; the tool used is that developed by Braden(1987).
The subjects of this study are 280 patients in intensive care units. Data are prospectively collected from May. 15, 1999 to Jan 15, 2000.
Data are analyzed by mean, percentage, chi-square, Mann-Whitney U and logistic regression.
The results of the study are as follows;
1.There is a positive relationship between low scoring and pressure ulcer development. By using the 12 cut-off point, sensitivity is 69.53% and specificity is 59.87% on the Braden scale.
2. Additional pressure ulcer risk factors are age, hemoglobin level and albumin level.
3. According to the logistic regression analysis, the major predictive factors contributing to the reduction of pressure ulcer development are found to be albumin level, activity, mobility, skin moisture, dietary intake, and sensory perception in the order of high contribution degree.
4. The prevalence of the pressure ulcer is 45.71%.
5. The most common pressure ulcer site is the coccyx(39.06%) and the next is the greater trochanter(32.03%).
